Can drool be art?

Post by Rum » Wed Jul 26, 2017 6:02 pm

I know there are some real philistines on the forum who like nothing better than taking pot shots at modern art that they don't understand. As an Art school graduate I chuckle at their ignorance and move on.

However I do have limits. And as some of those philistines might say - I know it when I see it.

"Justine Varga's portrait of her grandmother has caused controversy after winning the Olive Cotton Award - Australia's top portrait prize worth A$20,000 (£12,000). The portrait, called Maternal Line, contains no face - and the artist used her grandmother's pen scrawls and streaks of her saliva to create the work. But is it art?
Jackson Pollock made scrawly abstract drip paintings; 70 years later Justine Varga has made a scrawly abstract dribble painting. That's progress for you.
People complained about his work back in the 1940s, and people are complaining about hers now. So it goes.
Personally, I couldn't care less if she uses spit or sawdust to make her pictures (Warhol made images using urine), just as long as they are good".

It's not art unless you say it is.

I don't consider myself qualified to say whether it's art or not. All I can say is that if anybody tried to sell it to me, I'd laugh in their face.

I am curious about how the name for a biblical tribe, the Philistines, has morphed into a word describing boorish under-appreciators of the fine arts?

Yeah I saw this. Ridiculous. Not only isn't within the spirit of what photography is, it's not a bloody portrait. Art really is fucking ridiculous.

I've wondered this, too.
Wikipedia reveals no answers, but mentions:- "Evidence of careful town planning, including industrial zones. The olive industry of Ekron alone includes about 200 olive oil installations. Engineers estimate that the city's production may have been more than 1,000 tons, 30 percent of Israel's present-day production."
And:-"Considerable evidence for a large industry in fermented drink. Finds include breweries, wineries, and retail shops marketing beer and wine. Beer mugs and wine kraters are among the most common pottery finds." So I doubt they were quite the unsophisticated savages some people would have us think. I suspect religiously inspired bigotry had the major role here. Just a thought. :dunno:

Drool is degenerate in origin. Can only lead to zombie brain smudge art and then the end of art itself.

It's not art, but I'm not saying so until I'm sure I'm never going to do her.

To me art should be self-explanatory. If someone has to tell you it's art and has to give you this backstory then how would it ever be recognised as such if forgotten to time and found later?

If the Mona Lisa was found by archaeologists after 1,000 years they would recognise it as such, though they may not attach the same value. If they found yer man's urinal after the same length they'd just chuck it in with the rest.
