So all I need to create a masterpiece is a box of laxatives...

Anselm Kiefer has used semen in at least one of his works. It's unfortunate that he has gained a lot of notoriety for this; the semen is only one of many elements he uses, and his work certainly doesn't revolve around it as a conceptual breakthrough. Yet to many people it's the one thing he's known for. I think it's probably simpler for lazy art critics to point to and talk about, rather than to actually think about his work and deal with its complexities.

Actually, Kiefer is a jaw-droppingly magnificent artist - one of the most powerful of the 20th and 21st centuries. He is even able to take on the subject matter of the Holocaust - a treacherous area for artists because it's so hard to avoid pathetic sentimentality. But Kiefer's work is serious, monumental and without a hint of irony. No small feat for any artist.

Interesting! I didn't know of that Duchamp. Kiefer was born in '45. Curious.
I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

List of art that involved the use of bodily fluids. I'm using "art" in the widest possible sense, that is, as in "artifact".

Warhol did a piece where him and several other factory members pissed onto a sheet of hot iron - he then encased it in resin to preserve the "unique" colours and patterns as the urine began to corrode it. :tea:

Both of these quotes reveal total ignorance of Pollock's work. I recently discovered that a good way to replicate a Pollock painting is to dribble paint from what physicists call a chaotic pendulum. Critics often rubbish Pollock because all his later paintings were produced while he was blind drunk, but in getting himself blattered, he was merely transforming himself into a human chaotic pendulum, and I find a painting like Lavender Mist

to be one of the best ways to explain chaos theory, which in my experience few people actually understand. Unlike the work of the two artists referenced above, which I can only imagine is no more than a mess, Pollock's paintings are illustrations of chaos, which is not the same thing.
