macdoc, have you read Albert Facey's A Fortunate Life?

I also highly recommend Robert Hughes' well researched and gritty Fatal Shore to anyone interested in 'convict' transportation and colonial history.

I've probably finished three or four this year, and started seven or eight more. But now I've joined the library! Hopefully the due-back dates will help me commit to finishing a few more.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]
