Just finished 'On the Steel Breeze' last week. Have been a big fan of AR, 'specially the Revelation Space series. This one though... well, either he's running out of steam, or perhaps his editor is telling him to chop chunks out and stick to the plot. In many places, where one might expect to have things unfold and play out there's a rather discontinuous jump or a sketchy report ("And so, after that thing had happened..."), and even one amazingly blantant cop-out ("I have no recollection of what happened during that massive plot point other than a vague sense of it being something important") and I found myself going, "Oh, so you're not even going to bother then? We're just going to jump straight to the next bit then?" He's still very good on details, on working concepts through to their logical conclusion, on personal and political development, and on keeping things rolling along - the story is still packed with interesting ideas. Just felt a bit short changed.

Nonetheless, will be reading 'Poseidon's Wake' sometime soon, but not until I've read this.

Excellent! I've read most of the books that contain that set of characters - they were favourites of my anglophile father...

He wrote many novels, but the group I'm thinking of involve Richard Hannay and friends. Before Greenmantle was The Thirty-Nine Steps, of course, then, in order, Mr Standfast, The Island of Sheep, The Three Hostages and The Courts of the Morning.
