Philip Pullman - new book about Jesus

Post by Thinking Aloud » Mon Sep 07, 2009 6:58 pm

Philip Pullman, the children's author, is set to cause controversy with a new book - called The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ - denying that Jesus was the son of God.

All good and so on but I would have thought he had better things to do frankly.

Why do you say that Rum? Personally, I am looking forward to reading it, it sounds fascinating.

Sorry to resurrect (geddit :ddpan: ) an old thread but I came across this wonderful excerpt from a talk Pullman made recently. He's not just a good writer is he?

At least I'm housebroken.

Huh. So he's actually assuming that this Jesus the Christ character actually existed
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

It's written as a historical novel.

From the Guardian
"The story I tell comes out of the tension within the dual nature of Jesus Christ, but what I do with it is my responsibility alone. Parts of it read like a novel, parts like a history, and parts like a fairy tale; I wanted it to be like that because it is, among other things, a story about how stories become stories."

The Good Man Jesus and The Scoundrel Christ

Latest from Philip Pullman. I'm intrigued, but I'm wondering if he's entirely got hold of his marbles as well.

In the bestselling His Dark Materials books, author Philip Pullman depicted the church as a corrupt and murderous bureaucracy and God as senile, frail and impotent. And, despite condemnation by the Christian right, Pullman has now taken on the Gospels directly. In his new story, he writes that Jesus had a manipulative twin brother, Christ, who tempted him in the wilderness and betrayed him to the authorities.
Anyone buying it?

That depends on whether he's pulling a Dan Brown. If he is, then he can fuck right off in to a hole.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."
