Just finished reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid, got Iran: Empire of the Mind by Michael Axworthy on the go and possibly will go for Castles of Steel: Britain, Germany and the the Winning of the Great War At Sea after that.
Ohhh ... have you read Dreadnought as well by the same author? :read:
I have them both. Tasty!

At 800+ pages each, they definitely fall into the "tome" category...
"The bigger the better ...". I have so many door-step sized history books that I just don't know where to start right now ... :RAH:

I read Dreadnought while researching the German Naval Staff demographics and the "good old boy" club that sprang from it. I was neck deep in pre-WWI material at the time, and my prof was a German History specialist so I couldn't fake any of the material. I felt much put upon by that. :dq:
Hey, there's nothing wrong with being forced to know your material in depth. It builds character. :read:

I don't read German, so there was a bit more excitement for me in that.

And hey, guess what? The Germans discriminated against Jews even in uniform.

Just been flicking through Castles of Steel - you gotta love this bit:-

"...At 5:59pm....they emerged from a thick bank of mist to behold a terrible sight: the Grand Fleet spread before them upon the northern horizon. Twenty four British dreadnoughts and a host of cruisers and destroyers were 16,000 yards away..."
"I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled"

AND MERRY XMAS TO ONE AND All!

If you don't know much about the Battle of Coronel or the subsequent Battle of the Falkland Islands, then you're in for some good reading.

Admiral Sturdee: "German ships on the horizon? Then send the men to breakfast ...". Nelson would have approved. :coffee:

Guaranteed to make sure some of the troops crap themselves during the battle. I love the logic.

Speaking which, anybody ever read C. S. Forester's The Ship? British CLs against Italian CAs and BBs. Fair fight.
