I've been attracted to naturalistic novels of that period for years, but have never read anything by Zola... now thinking of jumping into this cycle and seeing if I can make it through the other side... :eddy:

And see that film if you have the opportunity! It's heart-wrenching.
FINALLY :fp: finished this novel last night - what a depressing masterpiece.

Highly recommended!

Honestly, Zola IS depressing, even the 'happy end' books like Au Bonheur des Dames have enough social horror to make Dickens feel light hearted and frolicsome by comparison

Well someone recommended I read Zola and I was jumping up and down thinking "OH GOODY! NEW MATERIAL!" :dance:
But I got to the library and.... they didn't have any of his books :nono:
