finished this novel last night - what a depressing masterpiece.

Honestly, Zola IS depressing, even the 'happy end' books like Au Bonheur des Dames have enough social horror to make Dickens feel light hearted and frolicsome by comparison

Well someone recommended I read Zola and I was jumping up and down thinking "OH GOODY! NEW MATERIAL!"
But I got to the library and.... they didn't have any of his books
