Rationalia Bookshelf

Post by Sisifo » Tue Mar 09, 2010 6:29 am

When I go to someone's house, I can't resist to browse his or her bookselves. Even if wrongly, I cannot avoid making an image of the person according to the books that are exposed to people.

In the little more than one year of Rationalia, among the cheese and the relax, a lot of books have been commented, recommended, mentioned. They were not what we had. They were those seen in conversations... I wondered what would be a bookshelf of those books like. I have compiled, with obviously a lot of misses, those that happened in the more obvious reading and literature threads.

I have to say that after seeing that bookshelf, I felt very proud of belonging here, and my reading list for years to come, will feed on it.

The final bookshelf with the book covers can be found in https://dl.dropbox.com/u/423407/Rationa ... f_2009.pdf; it's 2,40Mb. I would suggest to link it here permanently in some kind of sticky, until the next update, in the next months.

Having looked through the list, I would say about 25% I own and about 40% I have read.
Great work Sisifo, if I need recommendations I know where to come. *Bookmarked*

Likewise, bookmarked! I don't think my brain could hold all of that, but I saw about 20 that I need/want to read and I only got through the B-list.

My eyes are also immediately drawn to someone's bookshelf when I visit them. Actually, most of the time I'd be happy with browsing their bookshelves instead of talking to the people.

I think the Jeremy Clarkson book should go to the back of the shelf. Y'know... just so the visitors don't see it and get the wrong impression.

And nobody's ever recommended The Bible? :nono:

hmmm .. I should mention Anais Nin's Delta Of Venus somewhere ...
The above list is just the first year's Rationalia. I am sure it will grow exponentially next year. You didn't say that book before, you can recommend it now -o, you did-. I love it. It is a balanced and awesome library!

My bookshelf has had the same amount of books on it for the last 4 or 5 years despite the fact that I bought loads.

I really have to stop giving them away although I see no reason to keep them because it is very rare that I read any book twice.

Books I'd add to the list include:

Alan Turing: The Enigma Of Intelligence by Andrew Hodges - stunning biography of the man who did as much to save Britain from Nazi occupation as the Royal Air Force, which not only covers the Bletchley Park years, but a complete exposition, in eminently readable terms, of Turing's pioneering work on the theory of computers, and probably the best lay exposition of the operation of a Turing machine I've ever seen;

Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder - a delighful, whimsical tour of the world of Western philosophy, written by someone who eminently understands the subject, and who makes some of the more intractable deliberations of Kant and Wittgenstein accessible;

The Parrot's Theorem by Dennis Guedj - an absolutely ripping piece of fiction that takes the reader on a Baedecker Tour of the great theorems in mathematics, without once leaving the reader feeling overwhelmed by the subject matter - a 'must read' for anyone who wishes to understand why mathematicians find their subject so fascinating.

I read that straight after heart surgery, when I was still a bit drowsy - it had a wonderful dreamlike quality to it.

Thorhalland recommended it. :mrgreen:
