Anthem: Rush in the '70s
Martin Popoff

Taking a week off to start the 80s. Here, they are recording 18 minute songs. Click tracks (for tempo) were not used, as the songs were not in 4/4. Only the drummer could read drum charts but never made those. The three instruments and their parts were in their heads, but certainly a lot of the tune was somewhat spontaneous. The question arises: if the tape was lost in the recording process, how much could the recreate? The keyboard part was overdubbed, but sometimes that and the drums were the main thing on, with an acoustic guitar decorating it.

As the piece was mixed and finalized it would come to be the song. Then they had to learn it from the recording to play it live.

Tubular Bells must have been similar to do, though it was broken up into 5 minute parts.

Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

Turn stone to bread, said Daemon Duncetan
Turn stone to bread right away...

I'm re-reading the Bony books by Arthur Upfield. They are set in the Australia of the late 20's till just after WW2, and feature a half Aboriginal Detective called Napoleon Bonaparte, always just known as Bony, an expert tracker. They would not be politically correct these days, but are a reflection of the Australia of those days. Part of the interest for me is that they are set in mostly outback areas of Oz, often places we have been to on our travels. They were a great favourite of my mum and dad - I've got quite a few as old paperbacks, and the rest on Kindle...

Speaking of Kindle, my device is 11 years old, and no longer can download new books. I've bitten the bullet, and have ordered a new one, coming in 2 or 3 days. I'm hoping the process of registering it so it contains my old library is easy...

Currently reading my book on social anxiety and books about Taoism. I've also got books on using CBT or ACT therapy to tackle perfectionism, but I haven't started those yet.

I had barely begun Master and Commander when I had set it aside for other things. I've recently committed to reading an hour each day, if possible, the subject of which to be at my discretion each day. I've been focusing on self-help books, but I was tiring a bit today and recalled that both print and audiobooks satisfy my commitment, so I pulled up Master and Commander on audible. It's a much different experience listening rather than reading and I am finding the audiobook much better. His prose is composed of complex elocutions which are easier to digest with my ear than my eye. I had a similar problem with the prose of Henry James. I'm hoping this is an insight I can parlay into more enthusiasm for reading and listening.
