Stuff on TV or movies that seems wrong or annoying

Post by Tero » Sat Jan 01, 2022 4:23 pm

Such as:

With music concerts, you get this situation where a rock band has a singer who plays rhythm guitar. The guitar solo comes on. Over half the time the camera stays on the nonsinging singer. Not the lead guitarist.

Don't they teach that at director or camera man school?

Characters on detective shows that commit suicide with sleeping pills. It's very hard with modern pills.

Maybe they don't want to teach the easy way? A bottle of paracetamol and vodka.

Many of the movies that claim to be "based on a true story". The ones that include a few facts which are manifestly true, leave out others which would have provided verisimilitude and add bits that are utter inventions by the script writers.

Ford v Ferrari is a prime example. The film is based on Ford's failed attempt of buying Ferrari and what subsequently happened. It does not contain a lot of important stuff that is factually true. It leaves out a lot of important stuff that is factually true because it does not add to the drama/entertainment value and it adds a lot of invented stuff because it does add to the drama/entertainment value. In terms of entertainment value the movie is ordinary. In terms of being based on a true story it is crap.

It was much fun and well cast YRMV. It's entertainment...some is better than others.
Films based on true stories often have a random element that is hard to put into fully fictional accounts.

Editing and pace makes a huge difference and FvF has both.
Poetic licence is a thing :coffee:

So name your exemplar movie that is both entertaining and true to the story.

Masses of spiders. Harry Potter, Disney Star Wars: Mandalorian. Sci-fi shows with masses of small critters.

These scenes can only go exactly the same. The heroes escape. Or they are locked into something and a superhero destroys critters and saves them.

You misunderstood my gripe. I am not opposed to poetic license. The keyword of my objection to some movies advertised as "based on a true story" is that they lack verisimilitude. Ford v Ferrari is a glaring example. Its makers clearly did not care one jot about it.

a) maybe they are old shows, or situated in a past era when barbiturates were the hypnotic of choice?
b) any show displaying an easy to do way to commit suicide is likely not long for the airwaves...
c) and overloading the liver? sure works, but do you know how fucking long drawn and painful that is?

Cutting their palm whenever they need blood for some sort of magic spell. I'd just pick a fucking scab. As an old man who spends a lot of time around sharp things I have a surfeit of scabs at all times.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Oh yeah, this! And they never just knick their palm. They full on cut a long deep slice in it.

It only ever takes three attempts to find the backdoor into the Pentagon mainframe.

In car chases they only ever change up. Those gearboxes must have about 20 gears!

After the opening fight scenes in an action movie the hero never spends the rest of the film with two black eyes, a broken wrist, a limp, or complaining about persistent back pain etc.

The only reason to go to the loo is to have a cry or to read secret documents.

Where is that written requirement?
It was fun for me and many others.

If not for you that's fine, but you are in a small minority with both viewers and critics.
