Sicario (2015)

Post by piscator » Sun Jan 17, 2016 9:10 pm

Good flick. If you liked No Country For Old Men and Man On Fire, you'll definitely dig Sicario

Tight script and screenplay that reveals an intricate plot and nuanced characterization with a minimum of dialogue. Roger Deakins' cinematography almost steals the show. The sound and music are also well done and lend a pervading feeling of tension and stress that very much adds to the film. The acting is very strong. Emily Blunt is a much different type of tough chick than she was in Edge Of Tomorrow. Josh Brolin is effortlessly convincing. Benecio del Toro is just fucking badass.

Although they blow it a bit in the 1st scene, the film's attention to detail is very good and helps move the plot, which I won't summarize here. From the jostling aggressive rough ride of a security motorcade, to the handling of weapons, to the people living long days sleeping whenever they slow down, little things make this movie worth seeing more than once,

The numbing level of violence in the film is not gratuitous. Far from it, it's a central character and necessary plot and subplot element, much like the pervasive moral ambiguity.

I've had a massive crush on Emily Blunt for a long time. I'll see it just for her. :swoon:

Got to agree, piscator, great film.

Sounds like you guys were listening to a Muse album instead of watching a movie about the successful and illegal application of asymmetric warfare in support of prohibition.

Elements of the British Army fought a similar campaign in Columbia and Peru during the 80s and early 90s. Human rights were not an issue there either...

Anyone seen The Revenant yet? I saw one movie describe it as meaningless pain porn.

Probably an Animavore review...

The Ashley-Henry Men, like the French Canadian Voyaguers, Lewis & Clark, and later John Wesley Powell form a spectacular vein of history and legend in N. America. They were badasses.

I'm gunna wait for DVD. The panning wide angle perspective looks motion sickness inducing.

Lol. Don't go into this film expecting a spectacular vein of throbbing "history". It's like watching an episode of Bear Grylls is Bear Grylls got grilled by a bear.

I can understand that, and it's good to know I'm not the only one who felt like that since everything I've seen has been saying how it's the greatest thing ever. It's fantastically acted and beautifully shot, but jesus does it feel meaningless, and not in an existential struggling with the meaning of it all kind of way. Just, "fuck, all that for that? And now, it's over. Okay".

That's the feeling the trailer portrays as well. I'll def wait for the DVD. Is the Martian out on DVD yet?

Films like The Revenant get lauded because they're set against a background of ever increasingly bad movies and good is the new great.

Meanwhile The Martian, a movie with something to say, will get dumped on. They already offensively gave it a Golden Globe in the category of Best Musical or Comedy.
