Not mentioned so far:
Cross of Iron - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074695/
Downfall - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363163/
The Big Red One - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080437/
I have both of Clint Eastwood's movies about Iwo Jima, but I have yet to watch them.
Whatever you do, do not watch anything with John Wayne in it.
Already mentioned: Band of Brothers - if you can spare the ten hours to watch the entire series.

"The Big Red One" is stupid, IMNSHO.
"Downfall" I haven't seen. Except for the "altered" bits.

Watch them. Soon. Really.I have both of Clint Eastwood's movies about Iwo Jima, but I have yet to watch them.
Don't worry. Was never a fan. I liked the sphaghetti westerns and 'the man with no name'. JW was a bit too goody-two-shoes for me.Whatever you do, do not watch anything with John Wayne in it.
Done. A couple of times. And worth every minute.Already mentioned: Band of Brothers - if you can spare the ten hours to watch the entire series.

If you want some good fighting, "A Bridge Too Far" is excellent. Filmed on location as well.

Has anyone mentioned The Deerhunter? Or Apocalypse Now? Or is 'Nam off the menu?

'nam was at the top of my menu from the beginning. I think I've already seen just about every inch of film ever shot about it, tho. Several times.klr wrote:Has anyone mentioned The Deerhunter? Or Apocalypse Now? Or is 'Nam off the menu?

Filmed on location? One of my mates was an extra in Saving Private Ryan. I think he was killed on Omaha beach somewhere on the Waterford coast...Gawdzilla wrote:If you want some good fighting, "A Bridge Too Far" is excellent. Filmed on location as well.
Not necessarily a true war movie, but Empire of the Sun is also recommended.
For some reason, no it wouldn't.Gawdzilla wrote:Would it be a great surprise to say I'm not a fan of either? "Hamburger Hill" is 'Nam, btw.klr wrote:Has anyone mentioned The Deerhunter? Or Apocalypse Now? Or is 'Nam off the menu?
Never seen Hamburger Hill. For some reason I associated the title with Korea - although there are actually very few movies about the Korean War (which is a shame).

Not even proper science fiction.
It doesn't mean I don't like them*, they're just not real sci-fi.
*The first trilogy. The second lot should be sent to a galaxy far away ...

Dead Presidents will be here in a minute. No opinions?
Ah. Conspicuously absent in this thread is any mention of Jacob's Ladder. Granted, it's only a 'sort-of' VN War movie, but a damned good one...
