Derek and Clive anarchy

Post by Rum » Wed May 26, 2010 8:43 pm

Most people know Dudley Moore, and a lot of Brits will be familiar with Peter Cook. They were a double act for a while. They produced some non-mainstream media material too under the headline 'Derek and Clive'. Here is an anarchic example of them. I think it is brilliant. More available on Youtube..loads!

It is the height of genius.

What makes it even better is when people say it's sad, childish and bitter.

Isn't a pinnacle an ultimate anyway, thereby rendering the use of the word "ultimate" in your sentence superfluous?

No.

(n.) An architectural member, upright, and generally ending in a small spire, -- used to finish a buttress, to constitute a part in a proportion, as where pinnacles flank a gable or spire, and the like. Pinnacles may be considered primarily as added weight, where it is necessary to resist the thrust of an arch, etc.
(n.) Anything resembling a pinnacle; a lofty peak; a pointed summit.
(v. t.) To build or furnish with a pinnacle or pinnacles.

A particular structure may have a pinnacle, and there may be numerous identical structures with pinnacles, but in terms of human endeavour it is recognised as the ultimate in a particular field. For instance, the pinnacle of success in soccer terms is a World Cup Winner's medal - there's nothing comparable within the sport - it is the ultimate prize, the pinnacle.

But humour has multiple pinnacles, representing the best of the many different styles of humour. ;)

But you referred to the ultimate pinnacle of humour - not the ultimate pinnacle of this style of humour.

Exactly my point. Derek and Clive are the ultimate pinnacle of all styles of humour, not just their own.

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.
