I bought the book 'The Road' a few months ago. I started to read it and found it so depressing I had to abandon it. They made a movie of it as you will know and I didn't want to go to the cinema to see it and thought I would buy the DVD instead, which I did the other day.
I tried to watch it the other night and simply could not. I watched bits tonight and fast forwarded to the last section in the end just to see how it ended. It actually ended with a cheat. The whole book/film was about the last dregs of human existence on the planet and the last couple of minutes offered hope - unrealistic hope.
What a dreadful depressing ..I am off to kill myself.

Don't top yourself just yet, Rum. Not until I have a few beers with you first
This DVD is in my amazon.com cart, coincidentally. I had no idea it was depressing, though. Still, I like that sort of thing :emo:

I haven't watched the movie yet but I thought the book was amazing. It was haunting for sure, but there is something about the endurance of man and the ability to dream no matter what that is extremely moving. It's dark, but for me it wasn't depressing, I already know life can be shit and the universe wants us dead

My taste in books has always been pretty dark, what's the gist of the book?

It starts basically post some kind of apocalypse. They don't explain what happened just that everything has burned and died and the sky is ash. The main character is a father and his son just moving along trying to find a better place while dealing with the few other starving and depraved people left along the way. It's Cormac McCarty:

It's shit. The entire thing is poorly structured with no character development and ultimately ends up as apologetics for religious belief.
And yes, I've read it.

Well I just ordered it, mate, and it's on its way through the post as we speak. I'll let you know what I think after I've watched it.
I also ordered a couple Michael Caine films, some thriller with Jodie Foster, the latest Terry Gilliam film, the anime Grave of the Fireflies (if you really want a good cry), and Layer Cake (by the same guy who did Kick-Ass).

It wasn't half depressing enough for my tastes. And it
did have a happy ending and all

Happy? What it had was a Deus Ex Machina.

If you want something truly depressing watch 'Into the Wild' or 'Requiem for a Dream'
Two of my favourite movies.
We have no great war, no great depression.
Our great war is a spiritual war.
Our great depression is our lives.

Too convenient? I dunno. It still left me with the question of, well...what comes after? I mean despite the happy ending, it's still hopeless, right?
