Was the trilogy Jackson's brain child or did the studio execs press for it? Seems like a cash grab to me so I'm thinking more studio.

To be fair, he fucking loves the mythology, that's apparent. I suspect from my friends review that they are tying in some other stuff that makes the link with LOTR more apparent than just the Ring and I wonder if he's jamming in some stuff from Silmarillion and the like. I don't know the answer. He wasn't too complimentary about New Line shortly after LOTR, I remember vaguely him saying he'd never make the Hobbit for them, so perhaps he got his way.
