How many people does anyone know that actually watched this film?

I find that really amazing, because nearly everyone I ask over here says they've seen it!

No-one that I know in RL has seen it, that I know of.

Wow. Is it a Scottish thing then or something? It's huge here at the moment, and everyone is seeing it (often several times) and everyone is talking about it. I'm genuinely shocked that some of you don't know people who have seen it. I can't think of a recent film that has been seen by so many people I know. Weird.

Plus they were heavy in unobtainium, so the planet's magnetic field was holding them up. That's why we get the little demo at the human's base camp, to set us up for the Hallucination Mountains. (Yes, I know, but I like that name better.)

I just want you to know that wasn't a dig what I said. Just a genuine observation. I know more people in RL that love Titanic (ok, fair enough they're all girls and don't count ) than have even heard of Avatar. Which s why I said that the geek squad are many (making Avatar the highest grossing film ever) but just spread across the world like Jordan's legs.
If they all united we'd be fucked

Don't know or care.
Funnily enough Shawshank Redemption, which is most of the people I know in real life's favourite film, isn't even in the top 389 films! And I really mean almost every single person I know regards that as their favourite film (in real life). Which leads me to think the nerds are infiltrating on the sly.


EDIT: La Haine and City of God aren't on the list but Wild, Wild West is. Effectively meaning the argument from popularity is totally redundant.
2nd EDIT: Neither is Casablanca or Citizen Kaine.

But box office receipts don't mean anything true on their own.. however the public and critics seem to rate the film highly and the awards bodies do. So again what else does the film have to do to prove it is a success or a good film?

Incidentally it is 6,000,000 short of Titanic now obviously it will pass Titanic today

I believe IMdB does take inflation into account.
And speaking of the public I did meet 2 people last night who saw it, Tony who works behind the bar and an aul lad at the bar called Jimmy. Both of them were as completely under-whelmed by the film as I was. And they're not the only ones. IMdB is full of reviews by people who thought it was only "Ok" so your claim that the public rate it highly isn't quite accurate.
What do I think makes a film "good"? Well almost every one unequivocally of both sexes thinks Shawshank Redemption is their favourite film. People are still watching it now years on including younger people who missed it first time round so that to me would indicate a good film.
Even other Cameron films like Terminator 1 and 2 and Aliens I would still watch if they were on TV right now and enjoy them and probably will for years to come as would a lot of people.
I really can't say the same about Avatar. I'll watch it once more... maybe, but after that probably never again unless its on TV one day and there is absolutely nothing.. and I mean nothing else on (Like one of those days there are no new South Park or Family Guy episodes, Comedy Central is showing Two and a Half Men followed by King of Queens, documentary channels are showing UFO docs and presenting them as real, Bible Code, Nostrodamus, Deadliest Catch and Ultimate Weapon and any other movie on sucks).

Another point though that i would like to make in respect of this film - James Cameron wanted to make a film that EVERYONE could enjoy (from all over the world) it was called Project 880 because he wanted people from 8-80 to be able to enjoy it. For a film to be successful to a mass mass audience you can't write as if you're writing War and Peace..

You may complain that the film was preictable and so forth BAA but not everyone in this world is as intelligent as you.. if you want to create something with mass appeal you can't alienate 80% of your potential audience.
