Some of Stephen Baxter's books. I'm thinking of "Manifold: Time" and "Moonseed". The latter could be the ultimate Doomsday film. So could the former, really, on an even bigger scale - but only at the very end. Not as many opportunities for visuals.
I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

I know Discworld has been mentioned, and I've seen Hogfather and The Light Fantastic. I think they were both very badly produced and had great misinterpretation of the mood I get from reading the books.

What I would like very much to see is a movie for mature audiences made out of Pratchett's "Night Watch".
The book was great, and the characters are fantastic. I think some good actors should be pulled in and it should be done on a Hollywood size budget. Maybe Tim Burton could direct it, and get someone like Jonny Depp as the patrician.

Not sure who should play Vimes, but it should be someone with a stern looking face. Oh, how I dream of a really great movie being made from the Discworld books, and Night Watch in particular :begging:

I was watching The Colour Of Magic last night, and realised what was missing: Terry Pratchett writes social satire. It's biting and funny. It has been adapted into something that is occasionally whimsical at best.

Asimov's "The Gods Themselves" - but I don't know if there exists any director who can be slow and deliberate enough (the pacing should be "2001, a Space Odyssey" meets "Rear Window", or something like that) or a visual arts / CGI team who can depict the other universe's strangeness clearly and yet not make the audiences sea-sick. And who in their right mind would ever fund it?

sigh...

It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

It's interesting that most of the suggestions in this thread are SF or fantasy...

I cannot wait for The Hobbit to be shown. I gather filming starts soon.
I do wonder if the Elric stories will ever get off the ground --> Hurry uuuuuup!
Moorcock's Corum tales would make an interesting film too.

I would like a film to be made that was based upon a biography of Stephen Hawking.
