I started reading Marvel comics when I was 10 or 11 and I can remember fantasizing about films made from them and thinking they would never be able to. And here it is - a fucking flying aircraft carrier clear as the nose on your face and you believe it!

Fantastic!
I think I'll be disappointed. It will never live up to the impression of the comics in my head. The best superhero films so far for me have been the X-Men movies. Fantastic Four was a bitter disappointment because it should have been so amazingly awesome. I'll just have to hope this one, Avengers, won't suck. And I'm sure it won't, being Joss Whedon and all. I just have to try and accept it for what it is and not what I want it to be.
One thing, though. Marvel comics beat the shit out of DC any day. I am not at all excited about the new Batman film out soon. DC characters always seemed too cheesy, and too one-dimensional to me. The Batman comic had its moments when handled by a a few particularly gifted creative teams, but he was never a character I really gave a shit about. It was more an admiration for the artwork of Neal Adams or Marshall Rogers, say, than a love for the character itself. Marvel characters, on the other hand, always seemed very real to me and resonated very deeply.

I was with you until you got to Batman. Marvel has the better collection for sure, but Batman is the best comic-book character of all time, and The Dark Knight is the best superhero film ever, FACT. PERIOD. YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.

Avengers was great though, but I think X-men 2 might be the best Marvel film, still.

One word: Robin. :ddpan:

As far as the movies, I liked the one with Nicholson as The Joker. Because he's Jack Bloody Nicholson.

Yes, he is. Of course we could have a pedantic debate about what the term means, but there is enough of a history to show doesn't take super-human powers to be a superhero. Of course he doesn't think he is one, but he is. In any case, if it makes you feel better:

The Dark Knight is the best comic-book-character based film ever, FACT. PERIOD. YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.

Robin is not Batman, he is a side-kick (in some story-lines) but it doesn't take away from Batman's awesomeness. I think Nicholson was a great Joker, but the new set of films takes everything to another level and Heath Ledger can't be touched.

I think Tim Burton was well suited to the Batman films. His quirky sensibilities and warped sense of humor breathed life into the character. I think it's important for these superhero films not to take themselves too seriously. Nolan's Batman films take themselves very seriously, and consequently bore the shit out of me. Batman doesn't come across as cool. He just comes across as silly and ridiculous, and not silly in a good way. And as much as I like Christian Bale, playing the character completely straight results in a very bland Batman.
Oh and I fucking despised Heath Ledger as The Joker. Not really his fault. It was more the make-up that put me off. He looked fucking retarded. I don't know who the fuck decided a lipstick-covered-anus sort of look would be good for his face.

Danny DeVito put me off the Batman films for over a decade.

awesome awesome film
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

I preferred Batman Begins.. The Dark Knight was contrived and drawn out. I have severe doubts it would've got so much accolade if Health Ledger didn't die. Avengers Assemble is far better.

Ronja, the Ds will like "Mirror, Mirror", and it's a good role model movie for them, I believe.
