Re: So.... Seen Any Bad Movies Lately?
I don't know what the movie industry is up to atm. All the films in the cinema have been crap for weeks - months! They seem to have scraped the bottom of the barrel here too! I was walking past our local multi-screen cinema a couple of days ago (Vue) and Back to the Future was on - apparently to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its release! Crap!
Re: So.... Seen Any Bad Movies Lately?
BTF was not crap and is still not crap.
How dare you.
On a side note, movies have been shit for a long time.
Technology has played a big role in this. The more technology a film uses - CGI etc - the less its characters and story have to be engaging. Where you needed pacing and emotion, now you just needed to add a back track and some floating mountains.

Well I agree with you that BTF was a good movie, but showing in the cinema 25 years on? No way!The Mad Hatter wrote:BTF was not crap and is still not crap.

I also agree with you about CGI, though some good movies are still made. Shutter Island was the best of the recent batch in my book. They seem few and far between these days though.

The other types of films are still being made, they're just rarely blockbusters and pushed by the big studios (probably because they know what the majority of people want - bland action and cgi). The Mad Hatter wrote:BTF was not crap and is still not crap.

Locusts, with Lucy Lawless. Horrible acting, even more horrible special effects, and a crap story to boot.

No movie can hit as hard as a book or story, they don't have the means of setting the stage like an author can. He/she can take ten pages setting up a scene, movies have to do it in one eyeball shot. I just read the original story for "The Thing", and it was a scary now as it was 45 years ago when I first read it.Normal wrote:If only the movie had been cool as wellGawdzilla wrote:The original story was cool.Normal wrote:That's the one.Gawdzilla wrote:That the one where somebody screws up time?Normal wrote:Worst movie I have ever seen. I don't think that's true at all.No movie can hit as hard as a book or story, they don't have the means of setting the stage like an author can. I just read the original story for "The Thing", and it was a scary now as it was 45 years ago when I first read it.
A book is written as a book, for an audience who will be reading a book. You can't adapt a book to a visual medium and expect it to be the same.
But when you find a movie, a brilliant movie, it would never work as a book. There would be too much substance missing. The view of a vista can not be captured by a description of it.
Someone's emotions conveyed through metaphor, or vague poeticism, only ever give you an idea. A close-up of their face can tell you exactly what they're feeling, and to what degree.
The sound of a voice does more than punctuation.
The problem is that few movies take advantage of what the medium can offer, and there are too few actors with the skills to convey it.

Almost every bit of fantasy that's been written since has been better. Well, within reason.
