It is a simply superb piece of film making, and particularly of acting.

If Colin Firth doesn't get Best Actor Oscar there is something very badly wrong. What a superb film!
Finally got around to seeing this, and totally agreed. And Firth did win his Oscar, deservedly.

Yes, it is an emotional movie, which I'm sure many would even call sentimental (and not mean it as a compliment). As I have no personal ax to grind re: the British monarchy, I saw human beings trapped in a machinery which allowed them very little choice about their lives. Elizabeth's (then the Duchess of York) reply to Logue's inquiry if "Mr Johnson" was an "indentured servant" - "Something like that." set the film's tone for me.

Another good name for this film could have been "The Man Who Would Not Be King." 'Cause given even the smallest choice, the Duke of York (as presented in the film) wouldn't have been.

I wasn't that impressed with The King's Speech myself. Of course, when I saw it in the theatre, midway through, my BFF fell asleep and was sawing logs throughout most of the film. And me for my part, I was self-conscious that somebody was going to get pissed off and complain about her snoring. It may have colored my appreciation of the movie. But probably not much. There wasn't much to the story, and while I love watching Geoffrey Rush, I don't think any of the performances were particularly outstanding, including Colin Firth, whose portrayal of the frustration experienced by a stammerer was, to me, not convincing.

Emphasis mine. This surprised me, as I found Firth's performance quite good. So I googled a bit, trying to find a background for why Firth's role would not convince, but instead found quite a few comments by people who stutter/stammer themselves and liked and/or admired the way Firth did Bertie's speech impairment.

The most extensive and for me personally most interesting of the articles and interviews that I found was this: http://www.stammering.org/colinfirth.html

So, I have now grown quite curious: what about Firth's performance was not convincing for you? And what (kind of) acting do you find convincing?

William Shatner. He's the standard by which I judge all other actors.

The only good Downey is a Chaplin. The rest of his roles (that I have seen) are just window dressing.

This Sherlock was actually more interesting than the last one. It almost ends at the Reichenbach Falls. :woot:

I think maybe you're right. It's hard to tell. It could also be a random pile of shite. I might watch again too.

I'll slap up some thoughts on it on a separate thread later, I knew what I was expecting, but I wasn't quite expecting that. I'm a bit shaken to be honest, which is fucking rare.

Yes. A thread with a SPOILER warning on the title so us that have been affected by it can discuss :levi:
