Finally got around to seeing this, and totally agreed. And Firth did win his Oscar, deservedly.Rum wrote:I just got back from seeing The King's Speech. As a bit of a republican (read abolish monarchy, not political conservative Mericans!) I was not sure about going, but I had read such good reviews I thought I would take the risk.
It is a simply superb piece of film making, and particularly of acting.
If Colin Firth doesn't get Best Actor Oscar there is something very badly wrong. What a superb film!
Yes, it is an emotional movie, which I'm sure many would even call sentimental (and not mean it as a compliment). As I have no personal ax to grind re: the British monarchy, I saw human beings trapped in a machinery which allowed them very little choice about their lives. Elizabeth's (then the Duchess of York) reply to Logue's inquiry if "Mr Johnson" was an "indentured servant" - "Something like that." set the film's tone for me.
Another good name for this film could have been "The Man Who Would Not Be King." 'Cause given even the smallest choice, the Duke of York (as presented in the film) wouldn't have been.
