Re: The Hobbit will be Three Films, not Two
I was never a big fan of the books. Nothing against them. And I didn't dislike them or anything. Just not a big fan. Likewise, the Lord of the Ring films left me cold. They were visually stunning, but long dry boring and, at times, even rather stupid and silly. Also, I didn't give two shits about the characters or what happened to them. I watched them and not a single fuck was given.
So. I went into The Hobbit with little expectation. I was figuring on another visually stunning film that I would find generally boring and unengaging.
Not so.
This film was quite a lot of fun. It's like Jackson went back to the early days of his crazy horror films and recaptured that sense of mirth. I actually laughed out loud a number of times.
So there's that.
Also, the casting was great, and the acting very well done. While he looked fairly dull in the promo shots, the actor who portrayed young Bilbo was fucking fantastic. His facial expressions, his mannerisms, the delivery of his lines...everything perfect.
So there's that.
The biggest surprise for me, however, was just how engaging the story and characters were. This time around, I don't know if it was me, or if it was something different Jackson did. But I was drawn in, and I actually cared about the characters and what happened to them, and I cared about the story. I thought it was a story well told, and it even got me rather emotional. I got chocked up a fair few times, and I actually found myself wiping tears from my eyes a few times.
So there's that.
Some of the reviews I read stated that this film was too long, padded out, and not too terribly much was happening here. Mostly a set up for the remaining two films in the trilogy. And they also took issue with the fact there, in their opinion, there wasn't enough material to comfortably stretch out into three films. This is all bollocks. The film moved along at a good pace, keeping my interest throughout the entire two and a half hour (or thereabouts) running time. There was plenty of action, plenty of drama, and plenty going on to sustain interest. I can definitely see two more films being made with this material without the slightest strain.
So there's that.
The other thing I wanted to mention is that, for a wizard, Gandalf didn't seem to do a fuck of a lot in the previous films. Not many wizardy things. Here he casts a little more magic. Not a lot more. But at least a little more. And there's even a joke in the film about how he doesn't do quite as much wizardy things as you might expect. So that was cool.
And so there's that as well.
I dunno, overall just a really fun time, and the sort of picture it's genuinely worth going out to see on the big screen. Quite something to look at, and very enjoyable.

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.
