Derren Brown is actually a well known skeptic, before every one one of his shows he makes it clear that he has no supernatural abilities and that what he does is a mix of "magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship"

When you know about how he does his stuff (not just what he says he does) the majority is just straight up magical illusions with a bit of "psychology" window dressing and the remainder is based on suggestibility, hypnosis (whatever you want to call it)

If you can find a decent torr*nt for them, download his live shows (Something Wicked This Way Comes and Mind Reader - An Evening of Wonders) which are bloody fantastic they are probably more representative of his actual performance ability than his TV work which is suitably tailored for the masses and therefore less subtle.

As i said earlier (I think it was this thread) I recently went to see his latest show "Enigma" live and it was bloody brilliant!

Get Derren Brown's book Tricks of the Mind. It's the book that made me a full sceptic and atheist. It starts of about magic tricks then tells you how to do things like remember the order of 52 cards in a deck, then on to NLP, cold reading and hypnosis and finally, as if just snuck in there at the end, on to atheism.

+1 It's the book that really led to the cementing of my skepticism/atheism too

Unfortunately, I doubt it. The sorts of people likely to be taken in by it, much like their religious equivalents, have consistently shown themselves to be impervious to reason, logic, facts and other such ephemera.

I loved the bit about the mini: Powers (in a "reading") "you have a mini, don't you?"

Wow, amazing insight, the viewers think, he must be psychic.

Turns out she parked next to him on the way in...

And the incredibly accurate "hits" reading someone who, it turns out, lives next door to his sister.

Good programme, though. Looking forward to the next one!

I just watched the May 10th episode on 4od. Is it just me or is Joe a bit of an arsehole in general?

General Anus

I can't believe that he had the nerve to accuse Derren of stooping low after his disgusting display.
