Hola

Hey guys, just joined on a recommendation from a long time friend who most of you would know by his username lsdetroit.

As I'd imagine is the case for a lot of you, I was the unfortunate victim of an attempted religious upbringing by my parents. Unlike most of you, however, this religion happened to be Islam. Though I was brought up in the states, I've recently moved back to England - the country of my birth - and have been told that there are loads of English/Scottish/Irish on this forum. I'm particularly interested in what's going on here with the EDL here so I definitely would like to hear what everyone's take on that stuff is at some point.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll get a chance to discuss politics and religion at length with you all eventually. Just thought I'd say whats up for the time being. :D

Hi lotta!

Big welcome! :td:

The EDL, for those of you who are either overseas or simply aren't familiar with them is the "English Defence League." They appeared about a year ago ostensibly for the purposes of opposing fundamentalism, antisemitism in the muslim/asian community, and the introduction of elements of Sharia law in the UK, things which I wholeheartedly agree with them on. However, they seem to be associated with a lot of other far-right groups in Europe dedicated to stopping the "islamicisation of Europe," a hysterical non-cause which I would attribute to their not liking foreigners in their country.

And lastly and perhaps most importantly, I think that opposing Islam in a way that seems to revolve around vague notions of nationhood and English national identity - another arbitrary and largely fabricated concept which, like religion, has been used time and again to divide people and get them fighting amongst themselves - is not the right way to go about it.

Your username is strangely familiar. An old friend used it as his record-label name, if I recall correctly...

They are pretty far-right Nationalists, and not very pleasant IFAIK.

Welcome to Ratz, Lotta. I think you nailed the EDL in your description. Basically, they are nazi skinheads that found the BNP a little too moderate! I'd recommend that they should all be rounded up and gassed but somehow that doesn't quite seem right... :?
