All kids must read the Bible, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says

..BIBLE classes should be compulsory so children have a fundamental understanding of Christianity on leaving school, Tony Abbott says.

"I think everyone should have some familiarity with the great texts that are at the core of our civilisation," said the Federal Opposition leader.

"That includes, most importantly, the Bible.

"I think it would be impossible to have a good general education without at least some serious familiarity with the Bible and with the teachings of Christianity.

"That doesn't mean that people have to be believers."

But former Howard government Islamic advisor Dr Ameer Ali, said Mr Abbott's remarks were "over the top".

"It's one thing to say every child needs a good knowledge of history and geography or science," Dr Ali said.

"But it is something else to say all children should have a knowledge of the Bible. That might hurt other people who have their own holy scriptures," he said.

And the Australian Education Union's federal president, Angelo Gavrielatos, said that religion was not a priority for schools.

"There is a place for comparative studies of religion in the curriculum, but ultimately we consider it a private matter for parents and their children," he said.
Yes lets all indoctrinate the kiddies to believe in father abbott's sky fairy FFS.

I'm sure he would be up for compulsory readings of the Qur'an because by his reasoning the Qur'an is core to many Islamic civilizations and Islamic and Islamic majority countries. You could say that about the holy texts of all the major world religions.

We are a secular society if you want to learn about sky fairies go to a church/mosque/synagogue/temple/whatever. Schools are a place of learning not of religious indoctrination.

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

What's wrong with Das Kapital  :dono:

My friend read that in her first year. I was amused that the actual work is really short, about half the thick book was commentary and essays, probably to appease the communistophobes...

That said, considering we're talking about UK here, yes, equal time for Mein Kampf and Das Kapital! Also, throw in something French, for the ultimate uproar :naughty:

I knew somebody would think I was comparing the two. They are just two controversial books that would contrast nicely.

What about The Joy of Sex?

Sex is quite important for keeping civilisations going, so we might as well learn how to do it well.

Shoving a bible up Tony Abbott's arse should be compulsory (lubrication optional)! :lay:
Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

One can learn about the Bible, even learn great chunks of it by heart, without being indoctrinated, in the same way that one can do much the same with any compilation of myths and legends. I don't know any of Tony Abbott's other opinions to be able to fully understand the context of this soundbite - but just from what's been said, it doesn't seem to me that he is saying anything too different from what the likes of Richard Dawkins has said: That the Bible is a rich source of literary, musical and artistic reference in our culture and people could do well to be familiar with its texts.

Hell, even Christopher Hitchens has gone out of his way to impress this point:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/commen ... 855247.ece
He educates his daughter, Antonia, 13, at a Quaker school, Sidwell Friends, alma mater of Chelsea Clin ton and Al Gore’s son. He has taken her to Washington’s Anglican cathedral to familiarise her with the liturgy. He worries that without the scriptures – which he can quote chapter and verse – she will never understand Milton or Shakespeare
Of course, I disagree with the tenor of the word 'compulsory' - the idea that all schools and all students should be forced to do it whether they like it or not. That's not on. But I'm with the guy in promoting people actually reading the Bible...
Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep,
And go the fools among.
Prithee, nuncle, keep a schoolmaster that can teach
thy fool to lie: I would fain learn to lie.

Tony Abbott is a fundie and apart of the far-right faction that had toppled the last moderate leader of the liberal party Malcolm Turnbull. He has often being referred to as the mad monk et al.

It has really nothing to do with what you are on about its indoctrination clear and simple.
