Germany's powerful Catholic progressives are openly defying a recent Holy See pronouncement that priests cannot bless same-sex unions, by offering such blessings at services in about 100 different churches this week.

Interesting, if Francis is worth anything as a pope, I foresee a wave of excommunications.JimC wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 6:12 amhttps://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-11/ ... /100130924

Leaving aside the extremely amusing responses, it will be interesting to see how the Vatican reacts to this challenge to their authority. One considers the memory of Martin Luther (although I rather doubt he was gay-friendly...)

Nothing will happen. Germans pay church tax. Lots of church tax. So a lot of money flows from Germany to the Vatican.

I don't know. For some Christians the religion is the weakest it has ever been. They must feel anxious.

Meh. Just € 6.7 billion in 2019. That's barely enough to cover compensation for their priests' child-sex crimes. What's more, only 0.2% of that goes to the Vatican. The rest is used by the churches within Germany.

The 0,2% is just the formal minimum license costs. A lot more money flows additionally. No one knows how much because neither the German churches nor the Vatican publish any transparent information on that. There are estimates that about 1% of paid church taxes ends in Rome eventually.

which, if the figures mentioned here are the ones to work with, means 67 million... Unless the rebel churches are actually a majority of the German catholics, Rome might not be deterred from asserting authority by the loss.NineBerry wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 8:23 am
