It happens accidentally. If it turns out to be useful it aids survival of a species. Else it just happens.
Think about that!
How does a small toe aid in the survival of a species?
Gatcha!!!
You have not. Evolutionary changes do not happen for a reason. They happen accidentally. Some of them just happen to aid the survival of a species. Some used to, but no longer do (appendix? wisdom teeth?). Some never did. Some are actually detrimental to the survival of a species.
Arse about face. Evolutionary changes happen since they improve the chances of survival of a species.
Mutations happen accidentally. Those mutations that have a beneficial effect result in evolution.
It is a mixture. Some, if not most, evolutionary changes occur because of natural selection on a variable (via mutation) gene pool. Other changes are random, in the sense that they are neutral in terms of survival.
Polydactyly is the misfiring of the normal genetic control over the standard pentadactyl state. Over time, statistically, it is likely that such mutations are mildly selected against.
Evolutionary changes happen since they improve the chances of survival of a species.
Not at all. Evolutionary changes are caused by errors during DNA replication. Those errors can be beneficial, neutral or deleterious in regard to the chances of survival of a species. There is no intent to those changes. They are accidental, random changes.

You are confusing changes to the offspring of individuals with changes over evolutionary scale to a gene pool. Evolutionary changes are what occurs after a whole population alters through time. You are totally correct that mutational changes (to offspring) may be "beneficial, neutral or deleterious in regard to the chances of survival of a species", and that there is no intent involved.
Pope Francis has changed the Catholic Church's teaching on the death penalty, concluding it is always wrong as it "attacks" human dignity.
The Vatican announced that Francis had changed the catechism of the church — the compilation of official Catholic teaching.
Previously, the catechism said the church didn't exclude recourse to capital punishment "if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor".
The new teaching says the previous policy is outdated and that there are other ways to protect society.
No hell and brimstone then? Eternal death cant exist. Capital punishment is against the church's teachings.

...the foundation of which is errors during DNA replication, no?

A 6-year-old boy from China, who was born with 5 extra fingers and 6 extra toes, has undergone an operation to remove his extra digits. If you do the math – that’s 31 fingers and toes.
It has often struck me how fortuitous it is that DNA does make small mistakes in copying itself now and again. Without that little glitch there would be no evolution - at least of the kind we know. That would I assume mean that single cell life would never have evolved.
the hippie chick is worth more than all his *SCIENCE*
Science cannot explain EVERYTHING
To claim that certain real phenomena such as God, Eros, the "Soul", art, truth, beauty, and morality do not exist or matter because science cannot "PROVE" them is absolute nonsense.
