Buddhist teaching has the equivalent of the Christian command "Thou shalt not kill", but just like among Christians, Buddhists have a way around that. Japanese Buddhists participated in the second world war with enthusiasm. The rationale was that killing is allowed in order to prevent greater numbers of killings in the future. And of course, as in all other religions, there have been violent conflicts resulting in significant numbers of deaths between sects inside Buddhism. I think, overall Buddhists are no different to other humans. They just have better public image machinery.

Then there's that pesky Sri Lankan civil war and those inconvenient war-crimes tribunals...

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

The connection to Buddhism here may be a little strained - Shinto was a fairly dominant religion in the military...Svartalf wrote:and forget about Japanese atrocities versus China, Manchuria, and other nations between 1870 and 1945JimC wrote:Let's quietly sweep those massacres of the muslim minority by buddhists in Burma to one side, then...

Re: Buddhism, the real religion of peace...
I think the real point is whether there has been significant war-like activity stimulated by, or approved by, a given religion. This is (or has been) certainly true of Shinto, Christianity, Islam and others, but probably not from Buddhism. Individual buddhists have obviously engaged in violence, and the Japanese strain of buddhism was probably more accommodating of such activities during and before WW2 than other branches.Hermit wrote:AhemJimC wrote:The connection to Buddhism here may be a little strained - Shinto was a fairly dominant religion in the military...Svartalf wrote:and forget about Japanese atrocities versus China, Manchuria, and other nations between 1870 and 1945JimC wrote:Let's quietly sweep those massacres of the muslim minority by buddhists in Burma to one side, then...
