From an article in New Scientist 23 May.
Two weeks ago, Ananta Bijoy Das was murdered in Bangla Desh. His crime was editing a journal on reason, and standing up to religious bigotry.
On 26 February, Avijit Roy was also murdered in Bangla Desh. His crime was moderating a journal with the title 'Free Mind' (English translation).
In India, Narendra Dabholkar was murdered in 2013 for criticising Hindu extremists.
It appears that martyrdom is not just a fate given to religicos, but is meted out to those who stand up for clear, rational thought.

I've read about these examples, and they were publishing very modest stuff indeed, by western standards, not aggressive ranting at all. True enough. Just imagine what it's like to be a Christian these days. People are torturing and killing them all over the place.
