What is reality? Faith?
Most of what we believe we perceive is actually made up by our brains.
Is there an objective reality?
Is there an objective reality?

Re: What is reality? Faith?
If the universe around me exists, then yes. Though no one has access to it.
If the universe only exists in my mind and I am the only entity that exists, then no.
Either way the reality around me behaves the same. I can't walk through walls either way. So I shall treat them like they're real. Less broken noses that way.

That's pretty much my argument about the metaphysical wankery concerning solipsism and its opposite. Let him who believes in solipsism kick that brick with a force proportional to the strength of that belief. Then enjoy the thought that the resultant pain is not actually real.Animavore wrote:If the universe around me exists, then yes. Though no one has access to it.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

Really?rainbow wrote:Most of what we believe we perceive is actually made up by our brains.
You are saying that most of what we perceive has no basis in an external reality?
Yes.rainbow wrote:Is there an objective reality?
The only question is how accurately I perceive that objective reality.
If I am a "brain in a vat", then that is the objective reality even though I am unaware of it.
So, to answer the OP, reality is that which actually exists. Faith is the belief in something without reason.

I'm questioning it rather than stating it:MrFungus420 wrote:Really?rainbow wrote:Most of what we believe we perceive is actually made up by our brains.

We can play around with questioning it, but in pragmatic reality, we'll always use it as a working assumption, both in everyday life and the pursuit of an objective understanding of the universe.

You may say that, but people's grip on reality is not always as good as they imagine it to be.JimC wrote:We can play around with questioning it, but in pragmatic reality, we'll always use it as a working assumption, both in everyday life and the pursuit of an objective understanding of the universe.
I've noticed that with a lot of people, myself excluded.
They are downright delusional!

I think reality should be gripped firmly, then given a good rub. Who knows what might happen?rainbow wrote:You may say that, but people's grip on reality is not always as good as they imagine it to be.JimC wrote:We can play around with questioning it, but in pragmatic reality, we'll always use it as a working assumption, both in everyday life and the pursuit of an objective understanding of the universe.

You might want to read that article.rainbow wrote:http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/pie ... rt-reality
It does not support the idea that most of our perceptions have no basis in external reality. It is about some of the ways in which our perceptions may be flawed, but those perceptions are still all based on the external reality.
