Was Jesus Bacchus updated?

Post by Blind groper » Sun Mar 16, 2014 1:51 am

The old Roman and Greek legend of the god Bacchus (Dionysos in Greek) called him the "twice born". The myth said that he was eaten by Titans when very young, and the king of the gods (Jupiter or Zeus) found the one thing left over - his heart - and implanted it in his upper leg. From the heart, a new copy of the god grew and was born out of Jupiter's upper leg.

Was the idea of Jesus inspired by this? After all, Jesus was said to be killed, and then come back to life. If so, I will have to review my agnosticism, since Bacchus was the god of alcohol, and good times.

Given that most people's idea of a good time these days seems to be getting completely off their face on alcohol, I'm surprised there hasn't been something of a modern resurgence for dear old Bacchus. Bacchanalia would be perfectly at home in the 21st century.
