I actually think Mary had a cushion stuffed under her clothes and it was an elaborate hoax where in fact Joseph impregnated Mary's sister so Jesus was actually a bastard love child but obviously this was frowned upon, unless you were rich. The three kings were in on it and brought the baby hidden in a sack of myrhh and secretly placed him in the hay before the shepherds turned up although one of those knew Joseph's brother who knew that J had been having extra marital hanky panky so he was paid to keep his mouth shut.
