Well I watched it and the title confirms what we already know. The Catholic church is draped in shame over the abuse issue.

What comes over to me though is the increasingly empty, shabby and almost embarrassing institutional and paralysed state the church is in over this. They are in retreat but they have nowhere to hide and no high 'religious' ground to resort to. They've 'got nuthin', as they say.

The bishops' robes looked just comical, the dog collars soiled and tatty. The holy water a joke. The power over people's lives a dreadful and unnforgivable abuse.

An evil institution dressed up as delivering heavenly salvation. It makes me sick.

As Rum says, nothing we didn't already know but it was interesting to see just how threadbare and weak the RC church in Ireland looked. A gaggle of silly old men whose power and authority have just dribbled away. And good riddance.

It's brilliant seeing the Church have lost power. Irish kids today are so much more confident than we were. Young boys and girls are getting along with each other in a healthy way instead of being standoff-ish, looking over their shoulder that some priest or gossipy busy-body is watching their movements waiting to shame them. No one is worried about being forced into marriage due to accidental pregnancy. No one has to put up with abusive relationships because the Church see divorce as a greater sin than beating and even rape within a marriage. No more teens are being sent to abusive Catholic institutions for being "promiscuous" or getting pregnant outside of marriage. No more babies taken off vulnerable women against their will never to be seen again. Gone are the days of having to be forced to grovel to a smelly, strange old man in a darkened box and confess stupid little "sins". And, of course, the freedom to not have to subscribe to all of the above without fear of excommunication, shunning and isolation.

Not really for centuries. When the British ruled the Church were forced underground. For a long time Masses were said in secret (as was the Irish language taught in secret) as the British tried to stamp it out. It was after our Independence that the Church wandered in and stamped down their authority and dominance. More or less filling into the power vacuum.
