The reverse missionaries.
I'm not even going to post the link, but there's a prog on BBC2 at 9 tonight about christian missionaries from places like Milliawi (sp?), the West Indies and other rather less than progressive places who are coming to the newly godless countries, particularly in Europe, to use their emotional and 'charasmatic' approach to convert us back to their irrationally based beliefs that many of us have moved on from.

I did a google search for "reverse missionary" but it's NSFW ..

Re: The reverse missionaries.
Are they bringing VD with them?
Re: The reverse missionaries.
VD is so 19th century. They have AIDS now
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Re: The reverse missionaries.
Pretty barmy stuff alright.
There used be an African guy who stood on a busy street here at weekends and ranted all sorts of God-fearing fire-and-brimstone mumbo-jumpo, all the while frantically waving a bible at the disinterested shoppers. He seems to have given up the ghost, but there are a few hardy True Believers who come out on Saturday afternoon with their stall. A pity the African guy is still no longer around - I'd like to have seen a good Christian v. Muslim dust up.

Re: The reverse missionaries.
Meh. The human capacity and inclination to spread culture in order to make more of themselves is a good thing. It's one of the most important aspects of our species that has contributed to the success of homo sapiens. I understand you don't like the content of what they're spreading, and likely for good reason, but they are not stupid for attempting to spread it. Let them talk. And hope that the better cultural components triumph over the lesser in a war of ideas. I think the odds of the lesser being defeated by the better are not always what we would want, but I'm not going to fault anybody for trying.

Apophenia, I rather think you miss the stance of many here...
It's not that we're wringing our hands and complaining how dreadful it is...
We just think that the whole thing is fucking hilarious!
(and that they are bunch of complete raving loonies, of course...)

That about sums it up for me.JimC wrote:Apophenia, I rather think you miss the stance of many here...

If there's a serious side to this IMHO, it's the degree to which fundamental/evangelical religion has taken hold in the former colonies.

Oh I get the hilarious side. But Rum calling it stupidity and your rather ambiguous comment left me with the observation that if its stupidity it's a very human stupidity. I think you may be taking too much from the graphic I included. I included that as a last minute edit of a post that had already been posted. I largely just added it as an after-thought, not as a main point, and, had I time to edit the image, I likely would have not presented it the same way. The edit window timer was ticking, so I tracked down the image as fast as possible, and appended it unedited.JimC wrote:I'm not sure what position I ought to take on this...
