Name for people who beleive in God-but not the Jesus stuff?

Post by Jesus_of_Nazareth » Mon Feb 06, 2012 3:49 pm

Is there a name? (or an existing religion?).

Just seems that there is a gap in the market for those who beleive in God (the "traditional" christian / Muslim / Jewish one - not ones with loads of arms or comes in the form of a monkey) but who don't sign on with that the fella on a stick was actually his son (even if they accept he existed / did nice things), nor that the Paedo was his messenger nor that he requires someone to chop the end of his knob off.......not talking about those who have a vague feeling / hope that there is "something more" - borderline Agnostics.

Any thoughts?

the ones that believe the bible is "inspired" by this god, but is not literally true?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I have put aside every religion not part of the judeo-christian becuase 99% of folk brought up within that culture also do so (what adult in their right mind would decide that "God" did in fact have 8 arms. and the head of a monkey, or whatever......unless they had been brought up in the culture that backed that view as "normal" :hehe: ).

Deists simply seems a bit dull and Monotheists even duller :( ......and both would require explanation to the beleivers...

In the UK, probably someone saying they were C of E would be the closest :hehe: albeit even they (technically) back the Jesus stuff.

Monotheism without the Bible, Qran or Tanakh is called Deism.

Yeah, pretty much spot on

Most folks nowadays easily accept that the Bible is full of stuff that whilst relevant in the Bronze age is (in modern times) simply nonsense and therefore can be ignored - stoning your goat for having sex with your lawnmover, or summit :ask: .....alebit was written by folk who beleived in (the same) "God" - just wasn't actually written by God.

Not talking about folk who don't beleive that the Bible isn't something to do with God (it wouldn't be called the Bible otherwise!....errr..... :ask: ), even if not to be taken litterally......just that the God stuff doesn't include the Jesus end of things with him being the son of God. I guess kinda like being a Muslim, but without the Paedo worship. or blowing stuff up.

I am ignoring the Jews both for cultural reasons (who wants to be Jewish? - apart from the Jews) and also because they are bit too specific on the nonsense end of beleiving in "god".

Although no direct experiance (to both the surprise of myself and others!) that is probably fairly close to what I am talking about - albeit I understand that groups can vary on the degree of Woo waving end of things that is involved.......but still more towards the wishy washy "there must be something more" rather than a firm belief in God.

When I was a kid God had a long white beard and sat on a cloud surrounded by good looking birds with wings  . and was white :hehe: . Nowadays he seems to have been eclipsed by a Man on a Stick and / or a wishy washy feeling......I blame the Christians :irate:

If categorizing them is important to you, name them yourself?

I don't see the point of singling out Bible-believers, myself. I just call them all "theists" and be done with it. There's bigger fish to fry, to my mind.
these are things we think we know
these are feelings we might even share
these are thoughts we hide from ourselves
these are secrets we cannot lay bare.

Not sure if it's important to me :ask: - just that I suspect far more people around who simply beleive in God than those who also beleive in the Jesus stuff.......but for cultural reasons (and upbringing) think that the Christain version of God has to have Jesus attached (and all that goes with it)......but are techinically therefore not really "Christians".

I remember years back me Wife was convinced that everyone had to have a religion! To be fair to her, she was foreign (funny buggers are those) and her ID card did have a gap on it to state Religion......can't say we ever had any great religious discussions (hell, I didn't marry her for her theological abilities  ).....but she did accept that folk did not have to have religion for 2 reasons: a) that I was living proof of that and b) she couldn't think of any reasons to disagree - much to her puzzlement!

BTW long before I met her she had converted from Buddhist to Christian - the motivation being 90% a complete contempt for Buddhism, that Christian was more modern (lol!) and didn't involve doing anything - and she liked the story better (and hoped it was true). Apart from that she was solidly Atheist :hehe: .

Probably "God Botherers" is the closest term - but not an easy sell that one :hehe: (and probably not how someone would like to describe themselves!)
