Me Missus was Thai (once cremated does she retain her nationality? ).........limited exposure to Western "Culture" (an oxymoron if ever there was one ). Apart from selling drugs. and killing people (family business - they didn't quite invent all the stuff that Thailand is infamous for, but sure as sh#t played a key role - back in the 60's and 70's and although not what they once were, still lots of legacy Mojo ).

In many respects though she was very traditional / conservative in attitude and that included looking to me (as the male) to take care of her (obviously I failed on that one ). and not raping her once married (I succeeded on that one - that was an interesting conversation ).

The irony being that if a 1,000 angry Zulus came over the hill she would be one most able to take them on with a machete. And I would rate her chances at above 50%.....everyone has a gift, hers was an ability to send folk off to meet the Deity of their choice without blinking. The modern woman's suffrage movement started in France in the late 1700s, but it wasn't until the 1920's- 50's that most countries gave them the right to vote.
I suspect the wave from the 50's - 60's was under UN pressure, though just having the technical right to vote does not equal equality, and most non-Western nations are still far from it.
