What were you before you became and atheist?
I know some of the stories - Ayaan's is epic, for example! Mine was one of 'searching' until I realised there was nothing there to find - of a religious nature anyway?
How about you?
How about you?

I know I have posted about this somewhere earlier... will consult my salvaged posts from RDF to begin with (this *will* take a while).

I was sort of a rational pagany thing from about 1990-2001, and before that I was nothing and had never really thought about it, even though I went to religious schools for a couple of periods of my childhood.

I was raised Catholic but never really believed any of it.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay

And there it lays until the rain and sun

A lazy agnostic.
I used to be a more militant atheist, but lately I've been a lazy atheist.

My parents tried their best to make me Catholic. Didn't work.

Re: What were you before you became and atheist?
Raised in a climate of Protestantism, from my parents to school... Assumed both school and parents were being objective and truthful, rather than heaving assumptions at me, and I swallowed it whole. Was a literalist until I started asking questions that my parents said I was free to pursue, but that they didn't really have any answers to. So around 8-9 I veered towards agnosticism and by 14-15 I was pretty much a full-blown atheist.
I was worried about a disgruntled God when people swore and stuff like that... what are you supposed to do when you're young and naive and everybody around you buys into this nonsense?
