De-programming cults, de-programming religions.
Forced deprogramming of people kidnapped and brain washed by cults? Works apparently? What about translating onto religions?

It's about the efforts to wean people off Fortran.PordFrefect wrote:I only read the first half of the title and thought this would be a thread about the challenge of reverse engineering..

Fuck that. I genuinely believe that a large portion of the religious population are so dangerous that if you removed the warped "moral" core of their religions we'd have way too many nihilistic sociopaths to deal with.

Oh, good, the old "no morals without God" argument? Most people don't really believe in their god, so Heaven and Hell aren't the real restraints, it's the thought of having to share a cell with Bubba that keeps them in line.Audley Strange wrote:Fuck that. Yes the "no morals without God" argument, I don't think quite as simplistic an agument as you might assume.Gawdzilla wrote:Oh, good, the old "no morals without God" argument? It's a dodge used by the apologists routinely. Do you have a new spin on it? If so you might call Matt Dillahunty, he's been sounding bored lately.Audley Strange wrote:Yes the "no morals without God" argument, I don't think quite as simplistic an agument as you might assume.Gawdzilla wrote:Oh, good, the old "no morals without God" argument? I'm not an apologist for religion. I have no idea if my thoughts on it are new or otherwise nor do I have no idea who Matt Dillahunty is.Gawdzilla wrote:It's a dodge used by the apologists routinely. Well, you walked into a situation that has been going on for a good while then, because the apologists routinely claim God is the only source of morals.

Just designated zealots. If they're not causing the public problems, I'd rather they have the right to be as peacefully deluded as they like, because I want to keep my right to be as peacefully deluded as I like, too. I don't like the idea of them trying to force their worldview on me, so I don't try to force my worldview on them.
