Is it OK if I stop reading the Qur’aan? (Women only)

Post by Hermit » Sun May 08, 2011 5:26 am

This morning I stumbled upon an islamic advice site. It "aims to provide intelligent, authoritative responses to anyones (sic) question about Islam." Apparently, the site contains more than 7000 questions and answers. Here is an excerpt from one of them:

Q: "My husband gets annoyed at my reading Qur’aan a lot, as he says, because I am leaving him alone. Will I be sinning if I stop reading Qur’aan for him..."

A: "There is no blame on you if you read Qur’aan and do a lot of acts of worship, so long as that does not impinge upon your husband’s rights, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It is not permissible for a woman to fast when her husband is present, except with his permission.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5195; Muslim, 1026.

That is because the husband’s right to physical intimacy is obligatory, so it is not permissible to impinge on that by doing something that is naafil (supererogatory)."

I was hoping that the site was another parody site, but after some googling for cross-references came to the conclusion that it is not.

Don't be too cocky about that. The bible's equivalent is largely held in abeyance, but in this regard at least we were not much different until a short time ago. "Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything" [Ephesians 5:24] used to be the justification for refusing to recognise rape within a marriage. The legal presumption of "conjugal rights" (a metaphor for rape in marriage) was based on that verse and lasted for a lot longer than most people realise. In Australia, for instance, the first state to make it a criminal offense was New South Wales (in 1981). The last state to follow suit did so in 1992. In the USA the respective dates are 1975 and 1993, but today "marital rape" is still regarded as a lesser crime than other rapes in 33 of their states.

You got to understand jim that its one website and there is over 1 billion muslims in the world. Whilst the crazies are prominent in western media, they do not speak for all sometimes no more than a small sect with a few thousand followers and that is true with moderate sites as well its like claiming the pope and some of the stupid shit he comes up with (although he does not have a monopoly on leaders of major sects saying stupid shit) speaks for all christians including protestants of which not all protestants agree on things.

Most muslims would follow the laws of the land on such issues over the quran and would be horrified by the prospect of rape whatever the circumstance.

Instead of alienating all muslims by calling them nutjobs and insulting how about we engaged those who are often horrified by what al-qaeda and other crazies do and preach and unite against fundamentalism which is ultimate enemy of a secular and peaceful societies around the world. Remember countries which have majority muslim populations etc have being fighting the crazies. For al-qaeda etc it isnt about islam thats just properganda to get people reeled in its about converting people to their way of islam and eliminating the enemies of it and they preaching that their interpretation of islam is correct and all others are wrong and are heretics that will burn in hell especially shiites.

Sounds rather familar to me my old church used to preach similar that all other churches have deviated from proper way and are heretics and that they are doing god's work et al.

The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

It is wise not to lose track of the fact that, whatever crap people believe, they are still people with the same hopes, fears, compassion and pettiness as ourselves. Your post just reminded me of that. Good one, mate.
