Hitch 22!

Post by Rum » Sat May 07, 2011 4:32 pm

Have been meaning to get this for ages. Was at the library today and spotted it more or less by happy accident so I have it in my sticky mits!

Looking forward to reading it!

Anyone read it?

You're going to love it! Enjoy!
Atheists have always argued that this world is all that we have, and that our duty is to one another to make the very most and best of it. ~Christopher Hitchens~

Read it a couple of weeks ago. Very interesting stuff. I'm not normally given to reading memoirs or biographies, but I made an exception in this case and I'm glad I did.

Have it on my hard drive. Will read when I get a Kindle. Which, due to my laptop dying, is going to take longer than I though as I have to buy a new laptop now :nono:

I have started to read the book now and I am struck by something almost spooky considering his present medical condition. Hitchens opens the memoir with what I can only describe as an atheistic contemplation on the absolute finality and extinction that death brings and his take on it including how one responds to that in life - either stoically, nihilistic-ally or somehow humanistic-ally. It isn't cheerful reading and it makes me realise that death even for him, is/was the moderator of life.

Better tell Gawd quick - Hitch's mum (I have just read) was half Jewish!..actually possibly a bit more.

I'll keep you updated! Actually I have been surprised at the 'ordinariness' of his background. I assumed an upper middle class background. Far from it.

You can't be half Jewish. It don't work like that. Jooness is passed directly from the mother - it can't be transferred by sperms. If his mother's mother was a joo, so is she and so is he - 100%. If her father was a joo, she is just an everyday gentile like the rest of us. :prof:

We really should consider permabanning Gawd. He is beginning to have an unhealthy influence on some of us. :smug:

I've read it. His relationship with his father is quite interesting.
I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. [...] I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn’t frighten me. - Richard Feynman

Well this book is a mine of miscellaneous and as it turns out slightly spooky/coincidental info. Turns out Hitchens was on Balliol College Oxford's University challenge team ( a quiz for Universities for our Mericans..which is understating it a bit) . Balliol has a reputation for 'effortless superiority' however they lost much to their humiliation.

My son attended Balliol too and was also on their University Challenge team..and also lost..much to their humiliation!

University Challenge is the best programme on TV. If you get 6 or seven correct answers in an episode, you're doing well.

I bought it last Thursday, but haven't had time / remembered to a) mention it to MiM (!) b) open it after browsing a bit in the bookstore. I'm sure I will find it fascinating.
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

I tend to be a slow reader these days especially if I am enjoying a book and I am very much enjoying this one. I had not realised quite how radically far to the left he was as a young man, though I knew he was a socialist. Anyway, here's something I read earlier today that make me almost spurt my coffee.

His first job was on the Times working on an Education supplement. He says it was:

"a ghost job which I held for about six months until the editor said something which made it impossible to go on working for him*" (the asterisk is his)

At the bottom of the page the *
Trigger Warning!!!1! :
*""You're fired" were the exact words as I remember them".
