Religion to become extinct
Ssays model of census dataBy Jason Palmer
Science and technology reporter, BBC News, Dallas

A study using census data from nine countries shows that religion there is set for extinction, say researchers.

The data reflect a steady rise in those claiming no religious affiliation.

The team's mathematical model attempts to account for the interplay between the number of religious respondents and the social motives behind being one.

The result, reported at the American Physical Society meeting in Dallas, US, indicates that religion will all but die out altogether in those countries.

Nonlinear dynamics is invoked to explain a wide range of physical phenomena in which a number of factors play a part.

Nice to see the Human race making progress, albeit slowly. I'll be interested to see what this month's census shows for the UK.

I read this and wondered about it. I think it may be true for Christianity in the Western world -at least in the countries mentioned. Oddly, though, in Scandinavia, many people and registered members of churches through they hardly ever go so there is some sustaining of religion there even when belief is going down. Of course, in the UK, as will be shown in the Census, a majority of people will indicate a religious attachment (C of E or C of S north of the border) but it will not represent what is actual.ly happening. A recent poll of the British Humanist Society showed although people indicated affiliation to churches, a majority indicated, too, that they were not religious!

Islam is, of course, another issue. They are living about 600 years before the rest of us and have some time to get into the modern world.

You just reminded me to change my religion on the census from Pastafarian to none, as I realised it would be more statistically useful.

I'll believe that when Iran is a secular country, meccah is open to unbelievers, and the chretins are no longer a force that has to be reckoned with in US politics

Buddhists like all the other religions are consumed by web porn. It's those jiggly jubbly bouncers that killed religion after all Dawkins efforts failed. :moobs: :hehe:

"The idea is pretty simple," said Richard Wiener of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, and the University of Arizona.

"It posits that social groups that have more members are going to be more attractive to join, and it posits that social groups have a social status or utility.
Am I missing something? According to that idea, Anglicanism should be growing in Australia and New Zealand, Catholicism in Austria and Switzerland, Protestantism in the Netherlands, and so on.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould
