Theist/Atheist Book Idea - Your Thoughts

Post by cowiz » Thu Jan 27, 2011 8:44 pm

Not so much a debate, but a series of chapters/essays written from two world views - theistic and atheistic. Each essay not necessarily from the same author so the book would have a mix of atheist responses and differing religious views.

Each chapter is written in two parts, one by a theist and the other by an atheist.

Chapter titles could include (more ideas welcome):

1) Where Did it All Come from?
2) The Origin and Diversification of Life on Earth
3) The Foundation of Human Morality
4) The Problem of Consciousness - what makes "us"
5) The "Purpose" of Life with or without God

In the final chapter the theist will sum the atheist view points and vice versa - ideally as a report rather than editorial commentary.

Alternatively, rather then a book, this could be a blog idea where we address and comment on issues from both perspectives - and maybe pull the best bits later on and compile into a book - actually I like this idea better.

We could invite leading authorities on each side to contribute to subjects of specific interest to themselves.

The reader is then left to assess the "evidence" presented on it's own merits and make their own mind up. The book/blog takes no position and simply presents the essays.

Thoughts?

PS - I'll post this on RatSkep too.

I saw that - I responded there. I'm not going to go through all that effort again.

As an intellectual giant, this idea appeals to me. I'd be happy to contribute. I'm very good with words and I'm extremely bright, and I know what I'm on about.

Actually Chucky, you should write the entire thing from both perspectives. It would be a shame to have someone less intellectually capable than you ruin it.
