If you want to help someone "deconvert", what do you use?

Post by Libertarian » Fri Nov 19, 2010 3:57 pm

I have a few "searching" Christians who are teetering on the edge of agnosticism and I'd like to give them a bump in the right direction. I'm wondering..are there any websites that make a comprehensive argument against faith? I realize this is a huge subject..but it would certainly be useful if we had a compilation of sites that help educate people on the issues..and give them the tools necessary to realize supernatural beliefs are both unjustified and damaging. I realize nothing can break a connection entirely based on emotion, but we should certainly be able to wittle away at the intellectual connection people have to their faith.

So far I'm planning to refer them to Iron Chariots (http://www.ironchariots.org) which list the traditional arguments for and against God, as well as the About.com atheism page, which is a good all around educational resource. (http://atheism.about.com/od/doesgodexis ... ticism.htm)

I will also probably throw in Mark Twain's "The Fly" essay to highlight the problem of evil, one of the best argument against the infinitely good God most Christians believe in. - http://www.ratbags.com/rsoles/comment/twain02.htm

as well as few of my favorite Robert Ingersoll lectures like these..

Which Way? - http://www.infidels.org/library/histori ... h_way.html
The Gods - http://www.infidels.org/library/histori ... /gods.html
The Ghosts - http://www.infidels.org/library/histori ... hosts.html

Why won't god heal amputees ( http://whywontgodhealamputees.com) is also probably a good source to throw in there.

So far, this is the "deconversion starter kit" I've come up with...the sites I plan to share with any open-minded believer interested in the truth. If you have any other resources that might be helpful for this task, please post them here. :)

Hi Libertarian, welcome to the forum... :flowers:

you may want to introduce yourself here: http://rationalia.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=3

My contribution to your list would be 'Letter to a Christian Nation' by Sam Harris. It's an easy and short read.
Atheists have always argued that this world is all that we have, and that our duty is to one another to make the very most and best of it. ~Christopher Hitchens~

Good suggestion, thanks. It's a nice short book if I recall (around 90 pages) that should open some doors. I may get a few copies to give away as X-mas presents. ;)

As far as I remember, you can't push this thing. You can provide the materials, but they will have to get there on their own. It's more rewarding that way.
