Free thought
I'm after some examples how religion suppresses free thinking. Cheers.

I run with scissors. It makes me feel dangerous

Re: Free thought
The fact that it demands "belief" is already thought-suppressing. Believing means "not knowing", because if you knew you'd know, but when you don't know you believe, duh.

He did cross my mind. What about Copernicus? Did they try to shut him up, too?

You can't go past Martin Luther's condemnation of thinking: "Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has"Deep Sea Isopod wrote:I'm after some examples how religion suppresses free thinking. Cheers.

No. But he did appear before the inquisition and had to apologise for his claims of heliocentrism (based on Copernicus' earlier work.)Deep Sea Isopod wrote:Hang on. Was Galileo burned?Deep Sea Isopod wrote:Gawdzilla wrote:Galileo.

This guy was burned at the stake though - although it is not clear whether it was for his scientific views or for his heretical xtian ones.
A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

Re: Free thought
Many were burned not because of any free thought but just because their husband wished a new younger wife.

Re: Free thought
I was referring to Giordano Bruno, btw, when I mentioned the guy that got burned. The space between "Galileo" and "The guy who got burned . . ." was deliberate.

That is your answer.
To answer the OP ... carrot/stick manipulation through promises of paradise and threats of eternal suffering, the latter with greater and nastier emphasis in my experience ... A self perpetuating meme of moral dogma, righteousness and perversity.
