Atheism for Minorities

Post by camoguard » Wed Oct 27, 2010 1:13 pm

Oh hey, there's a new Bela smiley. :tf:

A lot of atheists seem to me to be white. No problem, the majority has to be something right? I've started to think it might be good to find a way to look for minority atheists that is atheists of color and poor atheists basically. I'm not really interested in evangelizing. But I am curious as to whether people who are less likely to have social privilege really see atheism as a valid option and I'd like to investigate.

Any ideas about where to start?

It would appear, in Britain, the white underclasses are usually too pissed or stoned to take their kids to the indoctrination clinics every Sunday. And yet those who have come from poorer countries are more likely to "believe". I'm wondering if this could be to do with "praying" for a good harvest, in Asia and Africa, whereas here, the kids don't even know what a field is, let alone a harvest crop.

The other day, Sir Michael Caine was being interviewed, and he say he was asked if he believed in god. "If you'd have had the life that I have had, you'd believe in god too."
So being rich in a rich country make you believe, and being poor in a poor country makes you believe.

Could be something in it? :ask: :hehe:

Vaguely remembered stats for Korea:

26% Christian
24% Buddhist
50% non-religious, if you don't count money as a religion

Are there any midget atheists?

Short on data for that.

That was a low blow. I thought that was beneath you.

In harmony with the post I quoted, it was abbreviated.

We should truncate this derail before the OP gets short with us.

Nip it in the bud? Wouldn't we be short-changing the whole premise?

Maybe, but stretching it out would be a little short-minded, eh?

Maybe if there were a science class for adults. It's my worry that atheists tend to come in larger numbers from privileged classes. And it's fine if that's the case from an observational standpoint. But I want to investigate atheists we might be overlooking that just don't know there is a community.

You know, I was actually quite sincere in my original question.

What about mentally handicapped atheists? Or physically disabled atheists?
We need outreach programs for them too.

You'll find that they won't be interested in joining groups that emphasize their differences. We tried for years to get groups going for students with challenges of all kinds and there was almost no interest. Appeal to them because they are atheists, not because they walked too close to an I.E.D.
