What with the Poops visit to the UK this week, discussion about religion and secularism have been high up on the simple minded agenda of the media. One issue which has cropped up a few times has been the stridency of the secular/atheist response here (which has been very gratifying from my perspective) and a general declaration from religious leaders that a life of faith and religion is much richer, worthy and happier than a life without a god.
What I truly fail to comprehend is how they feel they can defend themselves against scepticism as a collective whole. They all believe very different things to a greater or lesser extent, but in many cases to a mutually exclusive extent. They have all , in historical times killed followers of opposing faiths in very large numbers and they all have quite different visions of what their god is and does.
All I do is not believe in any of them. Which should I listen to if I change my mind?
I find it even more ironic that the Poop's final duty here today is to announce that someone is a saint (and therefore in heaven apparently). The person he is holying up is supposed to have healed someone or other, but he is a biggy for the Poop for another reason altogether. He was an Anglican Bishop who converted to Catholicism!
