Western and Eastern holidays

Post by Lozzer » Sun Sep 12, 2010 7:47 pm

Why does it seem to be that the cultural holidays of the West are primary about gluttony (the modern celebration of Easter revolves around the consumption of chocolate eggs, and Halloween is a time of 'begging' for sweets--and I don't need to even mention Christmas!) while Eastern traditions are so much more about abstinence, fasting and discipline?

That was going to be my antithesis, but less and less people actually practice it.

Rhamadam, and then there's the stoicism of Buddhist practices.

Ramadan and Lent are pretty similar traditions. As for gluttony, I'm pretty sure the majority of cultures in the world have similar traditions. Every culture has festivals and parties puncturing their lives and it's normal to use these as an excuse to get pissed, eat well and have fun.

There is plenty of gluttony going on in ramadan. They stuff themselves before sunrise and after sunset
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.
