200-300 Year Old Bible

Post by GoodSmeagol » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:10 pm

My boss just found a bible 179* edition and gave it to me, pretty cool to own something this old...

I have been looking around online to try and find its worth, but am having some difficulty.
The bible lacks a print date, but from my search I believe it to be late 1700's.

The name of the bible is:
The holy bible containing the old and new testaments with arguments prefixed to the different books
Edinburgh, printed by Mark and Charles Kerr his majesty's printer; and fold by James Gillies

Does anyone know a good site to reference these old books?

Thanks

That's some expensive toilet paper
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

I do not think that is the same issue I have, but...
Yup it is expensive toilet paper, The paper is pretty brittle and not very flexible. Might make an uncomfortable wipe, I think I will just leave it on my shelf...
Still cool to have tho...

There's something intriguing about really old books and documents, isn't there ... a tangible connection with our literary past and those before us who created, contributed and were shaped in some way by it.

The old bible I have sounds similar to the one you have, GS, though probably more recent. It also has black and white illustrations and maps. It's musty and tatty and it does look pretty cool. Not sure why I wanted to have it, except that it's a relic (although relatively recent) of historic, social and literary significance, I guess. It seems easier to apply a greater level of objectivity to the regard of this copy than to current versions like the ones found in hotels and hospitals which I just want to destroy, or at least contribute my thoughts to on the inside cover (and do). :demon: Go figure.

Wow, very good condition, mine has seen rougher days thats for sure, I will grab some pictures when I get a chance.
And yes, I look at it and think, heh this is some of the garbage that helped spawn todays fundies, but holding it just feels awesome. Who else has held this, where has it been? Interesting to ponder...

I had a copy of the The Art Bible, comprising the Old and New Testaments and illustrated, from 1896. The illustrations and the maps were fascinating.

You can even scroll through a copy of it here:
http://www.archive.org/stream/artbiblec ... 9/mode/2up

You might find your bible listed in that archives site, Goodsmeagol

Unfortunately I had to throw my Art Bible out in 2008 because it was stored against a wall in my house which was damp... which destroyed so many of my books.
