Holy baptism water contaminated
JERUSALEM: It's official - the holy waters of the River Jordan are full of crap.
Laboratory analysis commissioned by the Herald has confirmed the presence of two types of organism found only in human faeces. Dr Wail Siaj, who runs the Jerusalem Medical Laboratory in East Jerusalem, said a third organism remained unidentified.
''Two lactose-positive organisms, one E. coli, the other one also in the same family of organisms found in the human faeces,'' Dr Siaj told the Herald. ''The concentration of organisms was also quite high, which means that the river water is very contaminated. A third, lactose-negative, organism was also present in the water that we have not yet been able to identify.''
Each year thousands of Christian pilgrims plunge into the river at the site reputed to be where John baptised Jesus Christ. Rupert Murdoch's two youngest daughters, Grace, 8, and Chloe, 6, were christened there last month.
''Anyone who ingests this water is at serious risk of infection,'' Dr Siaj said. ''I wouldn't recommend it.''
Last century more than a billion cubic metres of water a year would flow south down the River Jordan from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. But decades of over-farming by Israel, Jordan, Syria and the Palestinians has turned the river into an almost stagnant pool of sewage and agricultural run-off.

Yuck! Why do people keep going there to be baptised in that poisonous filth? The water that Jesus was baptised in has long since flowed away downstream. Should Ruper Murdoch be condemned for child abuse? Who would dunk their children in a bathtub full of toilet? Worse still, in the name of the lord?

who knows? it was a crappy newspaper that commissioned the laboratory analysis... one that Rupert Murdoch took over a few years ago, in fact.

Perhaps most of them sign up for trips to Israel and, once there, are more embarrassed about not getting baptized than with the state of the sewage.

OTOH, perhaps if they take some of the water in a vial and shake it and bash it on the table just so, they can awaken the water's memory of Jesus and cure blindness or something with it.

Holy crap.

This isn't surprising. Most bodies of water are probably veritable cesspools (some more so than others), with the accumulated waste of all the animals that live in them (including human waste). This is why water treatment facilities have to go to great lengths to ensure that the water we get from our taps is free of harmful bacteria and the like. A lot of people aren't aware of just how
unclean untreated water actually is and tend to see it as something pure. For example, millions of people in India bathe in the Ganges, easily one of the filthiest rivers on the planet:
Blah, blah, blah

I caught a dose of
Giardiasis a couple of years ago from a "clean looking" river running through the countryside. My fault for bathing in February when the water was a balmy 7 degrees and the bacteria were really having a ball at the time. I had the shits for 18 months, and my doctors never diagnosed it - I had to. Google was my friend.
