These days mate is a friendly term for anyone, for either gender ...matey is its more sympathetic form ... also, guys addresses two or more people, again either, or mixed gender (though 'guy' singular still denotes a male).

The thing to consider though Mandy is that they think that you are using the Qur'an incorrectly by not beheading infidels or stoning women to death for not marrying the man that raped them, there is no specific way to decide on what the "true" meaning of the Qur'an is within Islam..... So people are going to keep doing exactly what they think the Qur'an tells them to do and will say that you've got the wrong end of the stick.

If you're not allowed to measure it against anything outside of the Qur'an then how do you know that you are taking it in the right context over other Muslims that interpret it differently?

Surely it shouldn't be newsworthy when a muslim doesn't stone a woman to death and if it is then you have to consider that that says more about Islam as a whole than the motives of the American government.

The thing with all holy books (including the Torah, Qur'an and New Testamant) is that they are so ambiguous and there are so many contradictions that you can pretty much build whatever philosophy you want out of them.

You can find verses to support a certain diet, to support the murder of infidels, to support the genital mutilation of little kids the list goes on.

Until the general populus stop recognising ancient man made fallible books as an absolute authority the world will be full of people exploiting the influence of said books for their own fucked up xenophobic, genocidal, oppressive ends.
