(Boy) George O'Dowd should weigh into this debate.
He was a contemporary of mine at school and was expelled for wearing black plastic bin liners.

Except, the only reason you've called raincoats bin liners (not a widely-used analogy to date) is to contrive a justification for Richard Dawkins's insult to muslim women.Robert_S wrote:That was kinda serious. I see people in bin liners often when there is a heavy rain on a day that started out bright and sunny. They do keep you dry and while people don't look their best, I've yet to say to myself: "That girl's wearing a garbage bag, she must be garbage."Robert_S wrote:Why do they dress in something that looks like a garbage container liner unless they think it's going to rain and they don't have proper rain gear?Exi5tentialist wrote:Why does he use an expression that portrays them as garbage if he doesn't think they are?Robert_S wrote:It does kinda look like a bin liner.
But that doesn't mean I or RD think that they are garbage any more than I think these saggy trousered kids who look like they cannot afford a belt are actually that skint.
But then he doesn't use language that portrays them as garbage. He uses language that portrays them as being portrayed as garbage. That is an important difference
And while we're at it, do you think the burka bears no resemblance to a large bin liner?
This picking and poking at all the little details in every off the cuff remark in search of something that someone somewhere could take offense to is the reason we can't have straightforward talk from politicians anymore.

Re: Dawkins on Alien Rubbish
The Muslim dress code for women is designed to cover the female from so that weak willed (my interpretation) Muslim men won't feel themselves "forced" to assault and rape them. It's not supposed to look attractive, quite the contrary (according to the misinterpretation of the word "modest" by many Muslims), so it looks like a fucking bin liner. Literally. Nothing was said about the contents.

I carried around a web belt for a week just waiting for the opportunity to give it away as a gesture of kindness. That was the week I didn't see a one of them.Tigger wrote:Don't they look fucking stupid? What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Except that you haven't shown its an insult to Muslim women yet, you've simply asserted that because you like to argue.Exi5tentialist wrote:Except, the only reason you've called raincoats bin liners (not a widely-used analogy to date) is to contrive a justification for Richard Dawkins's insult to muslim women.

Hey, but by the look of that photo they're having lots of babies, so you may be able to help out the next generation - by then they'll be waddling around with them around their ankles.Robert_S wrote:I carried around a web belt for a week just waiting for the opportunity to give it away as a gesture of kindness. But here we're taking the piss about someone's clothing choice. Would we be bigots if the male was wearing his pants like that because he interpreted some old book of bollocks a certain way?

"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

That it is a double standard to call someone a bigot for criticizing someone else's fashion just because the justification for the fashion statement comes from an interpretation of a book.Seraph wrote:Would you please explain what you are getting at?Robert_S wrote:Would we be bigots if the male was wearing his pants like that because he interpreted some old book of bollocks a certain way?

I reported a derail .. Tig, RobS and Bella's derail about the pants ... and babies
.. suggesting a split to the pub ..
.. and this is what you've come up with? Trying to shoehorn it back into the discussion?

Re: Dawkins on Alien Rubbish
A three post tangent is a derail on Rationalia now?
I will admit though, that I felt some urgency about getting my tangent back around to the main point after seeing your report.
If you really wish to ask the rest of the staff, I'll not complain about having those posts moved. Although Exi5 might raise an objection on the grounds of it being a case of "moderators using their powers inappropriately to manipulate the scope of discussions artificially"
